Nov. 3Victim identified in fire death

HAYWARD The body of a man found in the remains of a structure fire Saturday who was the apparent victim of a homicide has been identified.

The body of David W. Palm, 43, 1332 Highway F, Sawyer County, was discovered in the fire.

Another body found in the ashes of a mobile home at about 10 a.m. Sunday on Highway A near Spooner, in Washburn County, has been sent to St. Paul for an autopsy. That body is believed to be the man suspected in connection with the fatal fire the night before, which had been declared a murder.

Flu shot clinic offered today

A seasonal influenza vaccine clinic will be from 1 to 2 p.m. today at the Augusta Community Center, 601 Main St.

Call the Eau Claire City-County Health Department at 839-4718 to schedule an appointment.

This vaccine does not cover swine flu.

The shot costs $23. Medicare or Medicare Advantage plans will be accepted as payment. Medical Assistance will be accepted as payment only for those who are not Group Health, Compcare or Security Health Plan members.

Home damaged in kitchen blaze

A cooking oil fire Monday afternoon caused severe damage to an Eau Claire home.

According to the Eau Claire Fire Department:

Crews were dispatched at 3:11 p.m. to a home at 2916 Trinity St. It is owned by LeRoy and Carol Dobrenz.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw smoke coming from the eaves of the home. The fire was quickly knocked down, and the home was ventilated to remove smoke and heat.

The kitchen and living room sustained extensive fire damage. The upper floor received heat and smoke damage, and the lower floor had minor smoke damage. Total damage is estimated at $60,000.

Apparently, an unattended pan of oil on a stove top caught fire, and an attempt to douse it with a fire extinguisher was unsuccessful.

The owners will be staying with nearby family members.
