This month’s feature CE program focuses on encouraging pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to play a more active role in maintaining workplace safety and patient care standards that are necessary to meet the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), The Joint Commission (TJC), and Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations and requirements.
The course is structured to provide the latest practical information essential to maintain compliance and avoid legal culpability. The content includes a thorough overview of all current national regulatory agency recommendations and requirements.
This course is not intended to present state-specific regulations or replace established facility policies and procedures. However, by completing this program and submitting The 2008 Workplace Safety & Patient Care Standards post test, the healthcare professional will learn how to be in compliance with all applicable confidentiality and security laws including but not limited to HIPPA regulations.
Participants will learn how to:
- Use and disclose personal health information (PHI) and electronic PHI only as required or permitted by law
- Use all appropriate safeguards to prevent the unauthorized use or disclosure of PHI and EPHI
- Immediately recognize and report any inappropriate use or disclosure of PHI and EPHI or any security issue by notifying a Clinical Liaison or supervisor
- Use appropriate and reasonable efforts to mitigate any harmful effect
This course is very helpful in enabling pharmacists to identify key elements and strategies needed to assure a safe environment for patients and other healthcare workers. Further emphasis is placed upon current infection control guidelines. The program will also help pharmacists and pharmacy technicians identify critical regulatory agency standards including the National Patient Safety Goals and its implications for healthcare workers. Paramount to compliance is the ability of all healthcare workers to be aware of the necessity to maintain patient safety, confidentiality and privacy.
