Featured Article Headache: Therapeutic Update on Prevention and Treatment |
This month's CE program is focused on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of headache. Of the main classifications of headaches, migraine is considered to be by far the most serious, painful and debilitating of all. Twenty-four to twenty-eight million Americans are believed to suffer from recurring episodes which are often associated with concomitant gastrointestinal, neurological and autonomic symptoms. Even with this high estimate, it is reported that 59% of cases go undiagnosed and/or under treated in men and 49% in women. In a recent study by Hu et.al., the economic burden due to under productivity and lost work and school time is estimated to exceed 14 billion dollars annually. Commonly reported triggers of migraine include such factors as:
- Dietary
- Hormonal
- Environmental
- Medications and
- Behavioral and Physiological
