Colorectal cancer, also called colon cancer or bowel cancer is the fourth most common form of cancer in the United States.
Colorectal cancer is a disease that affects the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, and over 95% of the cancers are
andenocarcinomas. It is recommended that adults over the age of 50 should be screened annually for colorectal cancer, but
if there is a history of colon cancer in the family screening should be started earlier. Typically, screening by fecal
occult blood test and sigmoidoscopy are the preferred testing options. Treatment depends of the staging of the cancer that
is found in affected patients. If the cancer is detected in the early stages, and has not metastasized, it can be cured.
However, if the cancer is detected in the later stages of the disease the chance for cure is significantly decreased and
treatment options are surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. Educating your patients about colorectal cancers can help
identify the disease early resulting in a longer and healthier life.
