 Herbal Therapy Certificate Program
The University of Florida welcomes you to their Online Pharmacy Certificate Programs approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education. Each program is delivered in their unique and dynamic distance learning format that allows you to enhance your knowledge and skills in the comfort and convenience of your home or office without attending traditional classes or seminars. The University of Florida brings the experts to you!

Overview - Herbal Therapy
The University of Florida has developed a course designed to teach the pharmacy professional how to communicate with and care for patients seeking relief from symptoms of minor illnesses and seeking advice on additional products for preventive health measures. The course provides both the content and skills training necessary to carry out this function of the pharmacist. Each pharmacist participant in the course is required to demonstrate communication skills, patient assessment skills, and application of his or her knowledge of herbal products.

Patients and customers frequently call upon their pharmacist to answer many questions and concerns regarding the treatment of common complaints and symptoms, many of which are in regard to phytomedicinal and supplemental products. Pharmacists must be able to differentiate disease possibilities, recommend the appropriate therapy (if indicated) and instruct the patient in the proper use of recommended medications. These pharmacists are often placed in an awkward position because pharmacognosy was being de-emphasized in pharmacy curricula when many of them were in school and they have scant knowledge of phytomedicinal products. Traditionally, pharmacists have embraced their role as providers of information used to aid in the selection of "pharmaceutical drugs" for the treatment of specific complaints. Yet, without an adequate background in herbal medicines the pharmacist is unable to answer questions posed by his patients.

Program of Study
This 12-week program contains 8 modules of independent study using multimedia presentations and Internet-based assignments. A weekly program schedule will guide you through the mastery of the content and requisite skills necessary to advance to the next module. Each module contains skill-builders, which are Internet and practice-based assignments that assist participants to utilize knowledge gained from the video presentations and required readings to develop anticoagulant therapy monitoring and management skills. You will earn 8 continuing education credits (0.8 CEUs) after completion of modules 1-4 and 8 more continuing education credits (0.8 CEUs) after completion of modules 5-8. The University of Florida will award you a Certificate (1.6 CEUs) upon completion of the full program, indicating that you have mastered a rigorous course of study. Earn both the Certificate and your required CEUs!

What is an ACPE-Approved Certificate Program in Pharmacy?
A Certificate Program in Pharmacy provides pharmacists an opportunity to acquire new knowledge and skills that will enhance their practice or allow pursuit of an alternate career pathway. You can put what you learn to work for you and your patients almost immediately! The purpose of our certificate programs includes professional development, career advancement and mobility, enhanced pharmaceutical care, improvement in practice satisfaction and security, and educational preparation in support of Certification status and continuing education for state licensing and re-certification.

A "Certificate Program in Pharmacy" differs from the traditional certificate program. The differences are often subtle, but they are important to you as a learner and as a pharmacist. For many years, certificate programs of varying quality were offered to pharmacists, and there was no way for a pharmacist to know beforehand, if the program was a well-designed and structured program. Recently, the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), in cooperation with several national pharmacy organizations, universities, and professional groups developed quality assurance standards and guidelines. A Certificate Program in Pharmacy must adhere to these strict guidelines in order to carry the ACPE Certificate Program in Pharmacy seal and approval. Each of the University of Florida Pharmacy Certificate Programs adheres to these standards and is ACPE-approved. Spend your money wisely on ACPE-approved Pharmacy Certificate Programs!

*The University of Florida College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmaceutical education. Requirements for receiving credit are the completion of all assignments in each module of the course. Statements of Continuing Pharmaceutical Education Credit will be mailed by the University of Florida College of Pharmacy upon the completion of each module.

Certification
The University of Florida certificate programs give the knowledge and skills to prepare, in part, for certification exams administered by various organizations, such as the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). As the scope of pharmacy practice continues to expand to meet the needs of a more knowledgeable and health-conscious consumer, pharmacists are working with physicians and other prescribers to provide disease-specific information and care to their patients.
Disease state management (DSM) services take pharmaceutical care beyond the dispensing of medications to help patients manage such chronic diseases as diabetes, asthma, dyslipidemia, and anticoagulation treatment. In some cases pharmacists may have an interest in knowledge that will help with certification examinations that might be offered by an agency or organization authorized to provide certification. This appears to be an important first step in pharmacists being compensated by third party payers in some states. We believe these programs will provide the information you will need in preparing for certification examinations.
DSM examinations offered by NABP are standardized assessment tools designed to measure the knowledge and skills of pharmacists providing disease state management services to patients with asthma, diabetes, and dyslipidemia, as well as anticoagulation treatment. Each examination is based upon national standards developed by a coalition of experts representing NABP, the National Community Pharmacist Association (NCPA), the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS), PCS Health Systems, Inc. and pharmacy practitioners from the major practice areas.
