With the unexplained and unprecedented rise in fungal keratitis cases
among soft contact lens users in Asia and the United States, we, at
Advanced Medical Optics, wanted to take a moment to share some
important information about the disinfecting benefits and heritage of
our multi-purpose and peroxide systems. Advanced Medical Optics’ (AMO) COMPLETE® MoisturePLUS™
multi-purpose solutions have been trusted worldwide for daily lens care
cleaning and disinfection for nearly 15 years. We have shipped millions
of bottles of COMPLETE® MoisturePLUS™ solutions
across the globe through all climates and environmental conditions.
During this time, we have had an excellent safety record and no fungal
keratitis infections have been attributed to AMO products. We remain
confident in our lens care products and stand behind a tradition of
safety and comfort for optimal ocular health and a positive lens
wearing experience.
Over the years, AMO has developed COMPLETE® MoisturePLUS™
formulations to increase lens comfort, while maintaining its proven
disinfection efficacy. In fact, we believe there are two important
elements to properly prevent infections among contact lens wearers.
First, our products protect ocular tissue from infection. Thus,
safeguarding the corneal epithelial barrier function is paramount. The
second criterion is to provide contact lenses with a disinfection
safety system to effectively disinfect lenses to minimize the potential
for infection.
Industry studies and scientific
literature confirm the importance of both barrier function and
decontamination in preventing infection. Please let me know if you are
interested in receiving copies of this information.
We remind all eye care practitioners to share with patients the following guidelines for proper lens care, including:
- Wash hands with lanolin-free soap and water, and dry (lint-free method) before handling lenses.
- Wear and replace lenses according to the schedule prescribed by the doctor.
- Follow the specific lens cleaning and storage guidelines from the doctor and the solution manufacturer.
- Keep the contact lens case clean and replace every 1-3 months.
- Remove
the lenses and consult your doctor immediately if you experience
symptoms such as redness, pain, tearing, increased light sensitivity,
blurry vision, discharge or swelling.
Finally, if
your patients are uneasy about all-in-one solutions, consider offering
peroxides such as Ultracare®, Consept® and Oxysept® as an alternative.
