Envision Telepharmacy was established in an effort to provide a better way to extend pharmacy services for hospitals in need.
Although pharmacy related issues still occur after the pharmacist has gone home for the day (or week), extending pharmacist hours is most commonly not cost effective, especially for the small independent hospital. After many years with marginally effective performance improvement programs designed to enhance the safety of medication administration when a pharmacist was not available, the reality of extended pharmacy coverage became possible through technology that allows a pharmacist to be linked to the hospital through a telecommunications system.
Patients gain expanded safety and service, the hospital staff gain expanded pharmacy support and increased time to devote to their respective professional patient care duties, while the hospital incurs only a fraction of the normal cost of pharmacy services.
