6/28/17 - Company buys former Boehringer plant [St. Joseph News-Press, Mo.]

June 27ELWOOD, Kan. A California-based animal sciences company has decided to stake its claim in Doniphan County.

Kindred Biosciences, a biopharmaceutical company located near San Francisco, announced it will open a new 180,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Elwood, Kansas.

The facility was used most recently by Strategic Veterinary Pharmaceuticals Inc., a firm made up of local investors that ceased operations earlier this year.

Kindred bought the property, which includes about 8 acres of land and two buildings, from SVP for $3.75 million. Possession of the facility is expected sometime in the next 30 days.

Kindred Biosciences selected the location due to its ability to meet the anticipated manufacturing needs of its veterinary products pipeline, lowering costs and increasing margins.

"This is a world-class plant," said Dr. Richard Chin, Kindred's co-founder and chief executive officer. "It was essentially mothballed."

Denise Bevers, the company's other co-founder, referred to the St. Joseph location in the animal health corridor as an advantage. No information was available on the number of jobs. However, officials said some hires will be coming from the crop of former SVP employees.

"There is a tremendous pool of talent in the area, and we look forward to adding top talent to our growing team," said Bevers, who is Kindred's chief operating officer.

Chin said the start of plant operations will occur in stages. Purchasing the building, located in Elwood's west-side industrial area, made business sense and turned out to be a great opportunity, he added.

"We take the long view, and we're extremely fiscally conservative," he said during a Monday conference call. "I can't tell you how excited we are."

R. Patt Lilly, president and chief executive officer for the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce, said Kindred should have no difficulty drawing talent from a skilled manufacturing workforce in the area.

The Kansas City Area Development Council, Kansas Department of Commerce, Westar Energy, KC Animal Health Corridor and Doniphan County Economic Development all assisted in attracting Kindred.
