Pharmacy Spanish CE
By Peter Rubino, Director of Continuing Education
Denver, CO --- RxSchool is excited to announce its newest CE program, Pharmacy Spanish.
¿Hola, como estas? What’s going on? Why is the title of this month’s featured CE program written in Spanish? ¿Disculpe, no habla español? According to the latest US Census Bureau statistics, Latinos now represent the largest minority group in the country. They presently constitute almost 14% of the total US population, with over 40 million people. They are also the most rapidly-growing ethnic group with an annual growth rate of 5.8%, as compared to 1.3% in the general US population. Based on this growth rate, it is estimated that there will be more than 102.6 million Latino Americans, representing about 24% of the total US population, by the year 2050. Interestingly, subdivisions within this ethnic group, Mexican Americans (58%), Puerto Ricans (10%), Cubans (4%) and Central and South Americans (9%) and others (19%), have a disproportionate prevalence of diabetes which overall, is twice as high as that of the non-Latino white population. If these statistical trends continue, it is highly likely that in the near future, one out of every four patients who come through the doors of your pharmacy will speak Spanish, many as their primary language.
Although hypothetical, what if this situation arose one evening while you are working alone in the pharmacy? A patient who appears to be in his mid-sixties, enters in obvious duress, walks slowly up to the counter and whispers to you in a subdued tone, “Buenas tardes doctor, habla español? Por favor, no me siento bien. ¿Puede darme algo para este dolor en el pecho?”
What is this patient asking you? What would you say and more importantly, what would you do? Would you have recognized this as a potentially life threatening situation? Of course, if you are already fluent or semi-fluent in Spanish, consider yourself a very valuable asset to your employer. But what if you have a limited or no working knowledge of the language? One answer may be found as close as your nearest browser. All you need to do is simply log onto RxSchool.com, to find this very important and useful continuing education program:
