February Disease Focus » Heart Disease
Heart disease is a generic term for a variety of conditions affecting the heart and the blood vessels in the heart. According to the most recent statistical analysis completed by the American Heart Association, it is estimated that close to 80,700,000 American adults (one in three) have one or more types of cardiovascular disease. These cardiovascular diseases include: coronary artery disease (CAD), heart failure, arrhythmias, and valvular disease to name a few. Unavoidable risk factors for attaining heart disease include genetic predisposition, age, sex, and race. Risk factors that can be modified with lifestyle change and medication therapy include obesity, diabetes, tobacco smoking, stress, alcohol, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and physical inactivity. Although we are unable to impact a patient’s unavoidable risk factors, you can help your patients identify those risk factors that can be changed and assist them in prioritizing those modification to their lifestyles that can help minimize their risk of heart disease.
