Featured Article Type-2 Diabetes: Managing the Complexity of Current and Emerging Treatments
In a recent article appearing in Chain Drug Review, it was stated that the cost of treating diabetes in the US is approaching 175 billion dollars annually, a figure that has increased by 32% since 2002!
This month's CE program focuses on addressing the complexities of treatment of type-2 diabetes (T2DM) which accounts for an overwhelming 90-95% of all diagnosed diabetes cases. Of the estimated 20.8 million people (7% of the US population) with this disease, it is estimated that nearly one third are still undiagnosed. But even as the prevalence of diabetes continues unabated, recent studies show that control of diabetes and its associated morbidity and mortality continues to deteriorate. Why is this so and what can be done by pharmacists and allied health professionals to stem and/or reverse this trend? This is the pivotal question and essential focus of our CE program of the month.

Upcoming Disease Focus for May » Asthma
Asthma is an inflammatory disorder that causes airway constriction, resulting in the patient having difficulty breathing. Approximately 20 million Americans suffer from asthma, and those that have family history of asthma and suffer from allergies are most likely to experience asthma symptoms at some point in their lives. Although not all patients have the following symptoms, most complain of shortness of breath, coughing attacks, wheezing, and feel as though they are unable to completely fill their lungs with air. Asthma symptoms are sometimes triggered by exercise, exposure to allergens, irritants such as cigarette smoke, and viral infections.
Symptoms vary from patient to patient, but the overall goal of treatment is to reduce both severity and frequency of these symptoms. Medications used to treat asthmatic patients can be categorized into those that provide immediate relief from an asthma attack, and those long-term control medications that prevent symptom breakthrough. Beta-agonists are bronchodilator medicines that open the airway during an asthmatic attack, and are good at treating exercise induced asthma by opening the airway and relaxing the muscles around the airway. The most effective long-term control medicine is an inhaled corticosteroid, which reduces inflammation in the lungs. Most long-term control medicines must be taken daily, even when you do not have symptoms. Other long-term control medicines include inhaled long-acting beta-agonists, leukotriene modifiers, cromolyn, and theophylline.
