Disease Focus of the Month: Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a non-life threatening condition caused by the presence of endometrial tissue outside of the uterine cavity, which leads to an inflammatory reaction. The incidence of endometriosis has remained relatively constant over the last 25 years at 6-8% of the population (close to 5 million in the US). Incidence is highest in females between the ages of 25-35 and may lead to infertility in 30-40% of females affected by the condition. The most common symptoms are pain in and around the abdomen, pelvis, and lower back.
Due to the pain associated with endometriosis, and the potential for infertility, early diagnosis is critical. An OB/GYN will typically utilize diagnostic tools such as ultrasound and MRI testing to identify endometriosis. However, the only way to identify endometriosis with certainty is through an outpatient surgery called a laparoscopy. Treatment options include a combination of pain medications (typically NSAIDs), hormone treatment, birth control pills, progestins when the patient is intolerant to estrogens, Gonadotropin releasing hormone agents, and male hormones like Danazol.
It is believed that women can reduce their chances of having endometriosis by limiting their alcohol and caffeine intake and maintaining a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise. Encourage your patients to minimize their risk factors and make yearly OB/GYN visits to decrease their chance for developing endometriosis.
