In the recent Pharmacy Choice Newsletter, the drug Zelnorm® (tegaserod maleate) was included as a drug utilized in the treatment of IBS. As of March 30th, 2007, the FDA announced the removal of the drug from the market due to the increased risk of cardiovascular adverse events associated with use of the drug.
The drug Lotrenex® (alosetron hydrochloride) is still available and is approved for treatment in women with severe diarrhea, who have failed to respond to modifications in diet and other treatment protocols. Other drug treatment options include anti-diarrheals like Lomotil® (atropine and diphenoxylate), and anti-spasmotics such as Donnatal® (Phenobarbital, Hyoscyamine sulfate, Atropine sulfate, Scopolamine hydrobromide), Bentyl® (dicyclomine hydrochloride), Levsin® (hyoscyamine), and Librax® (Chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride, Clidinium bromide).
