Featured Article - Update on Influenza 2007-2008: What Pharmacists Should Know
Now that cold and flu season is squarely upon us, it is time to focus on what constitutes flu and what can be done to prevent and/or treat its symptoms. On average, 5-20% of people in the US will get flu symptoms this year, with the highest percentage of these in young children. Over 200,000 cases will require hospitalization, with the majority of these being elderly patients. Disease Focus of the Month: Aplastic Anemia
Aplastic anemia is rare disease of the bone marrow which ultimately leads to the body's inability to produce a sufficient amount of new red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Patients that suffer from this disease are susceptible to infection, prolonged bleeding from normal cuts and lesions due to the bodies reduced ability to clot, and general fatigue due to decreased amounts of red blood cells that are responsible for delivering oxygen and removing waste throughout the body. Aplastic anemia is a rare disease that affects approximately 3 out of every 1 million people in the US. Although a rare disease, early diagnosis by blood tests and confirmation by bone marrow biopsy is critical in providing the best treatment options for your patients.
