Help outrun cancer
Hoosiers Outrun Cancer, a 5K and 1-mile walk/run race, will take place Sept. 30 starting at 9 a.m. at Indiana University Memorial Stadium, 1001 E. 17th St. in Bloomington. The event is hosted by the Bloomington Hospital Foundation, and proceeds benefit the IU Health Olcott Center, which provides free cancer prevention, early detection, assistance, diagnosis and treatment.

Learn, give input on library
Chris Jackson, from the Monroe County Public Library, will speak at the August meeting of the Active Aging group, which will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Meadowood Retirement Community, 2455 N. Tamarack Trail in Bloomington. Jackson will speak about the strategic direction for the library and will gather input from the group. Be prepared to be a part of a library focus group. Sign up for the Senior Games
Mark your calendar for the 2017 Senior Games, which will be Sept. 7-21. Come join the fun. Anyone ages 50 years old and older can play. Register by Aug. 28 for the early bird registration fee of $5 and get a T-shirt. Registration fees after Aug. 28 are $10, with no guarantee of a T-shirt. Write your own songs
Come learn about song writing, as well as try to write your own songs 10:30 a.m. to noon Thursdays in August at the Endwright Center at 631 W. Edgewood Drive, Ellettsville. Cost is $12 for members and $30 for nonmembers. Learn more about kidney disease
From 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 18 there will be an educational class about chronic kidney disease at the Endwright Center. Sponsored by Fresenius Kidney Care, the class will talk about what causes kidney disease, symptoms, ways to manage the disease and options of transplant, home and in-center dialysis. Spouse, partners can get help
The Care Circle Support Group for spouse caregivers of people with Alzheiimer's and dementia will meet 3:30-5 p.m. the third and first Wednesdays of each month at the IU Health Community Health Conference Room, 333 E. Why is exercise important?
Learn why exercise is important for your overall health and well-being, as well as how to set up a basic exercise program for yourself, from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 25 at Ellettsville's Endwright Center. The instructor will lead participants through the recommended guidelines for improving overall fitness, including cardiorespiratory strength and flexibility. Basics, plans of Medicare explained
From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 16, a free educational class about available Medicare choices for people who are new to Medicare will be at the Endwright Center. This class is provided by the State Health Insurance Assistance Program, which is a national network of trained counselors who provide free, objective information to help people understand their Medicare options. Learn how to manage your stuff, get motivated and get things sorted out from 1 to 2 p.m. Aug. 30 in a free class presented by Courtney Stewart, health and human sciences educator with Purdue Extension, Monroe County. Senior Bowling League starting up
The Senior Bowling League for men and women 50 years and older will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at Classic Bowling Lanes, 1421 N. Willis Drive in Bloomington. Trip to French Lick Casino scheduled
Monroe County Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a day trip to French Lick Casino on Sept. 12. The bus will depart from the Kmart west parking lot at 9 a.m. and return at 4 p.m. Participants will be responsible for their lunch. Fee is $25 per person.
