8/13/17 - New technique ensures painless knee op [Gulf Daily News (Bahrain)]

A DOCTOR who advocates a surgical approach designed to minimise patient discomfort is now hoping to encourage other specialists in the Middle East to adopt the approach.

King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) trauma and orthopaedic consultant, Dr Hesham Al Khateeb, is a supporter of the Enhanced Recovery Programme (ERP).

He says it can ensure painless joint replacement surgery and optimise recovery, with patients who undergo total knee replacement surgery going home in three days instead of two weeks.

They also experience reduced blood loss and have minimal pain, said Dr Al Khateeb.

"This is a fairly unique and comprehensive programme, not just for orthopaedics, but more recently has taken a major role in orthopaedics, particularly in knee replacements or joint replacement surgeries," he added.

"The aim is to ensure the most pain free and sleek patient experience possible during all three phases of surgery - preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative." He reported a more than 90 per cent success rate in over 100 patients who underwent ERP treatment at KHUH since 2014.

Before surgery patients take part in group sessions with others suffering from similar conditions, during which they are advised about the type of physiotherapy they should expect after their procedure.

During surgery a drug that controls bleeding is used, along with a "special cocktail of drugs" to ensure patients are pain free after the operation. "The patient has no pain and can do physiotherapy and can walk around because of this," said Dr Al Khateeb.

"A majority of our patients have spinal anaesthetics and are actually awake - some even watch the procedure on a TV screen or chat with me when I do the procedure because they are pain free." Dr Al Khateeb completed his orthopaedic training in London before embarking on a hip and knee fellowship at the University of Western Ontario.
