1/12/19 - Torrance State Hospital to Celebrate 100 Years of Service in Treating Patients With Mental Illness

TORRANCE, Pennsylvania, Jan. 11 The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services issued the following news:

Department of Human Services (DHS) Secretary Teresa Miller today announced Torrance State Hospital will mark 100 years of caring for and treating patients with mental illness. In November 1919, five patients were transferred from Danville State Hospital, beginning a century of uninterrupted service to the community.

From the five original patients, the patient population of Torrance State Hospital grew to around 3,000 in the last century. At that time, the hospital was largely self-sustaining, with a large working farm. There are currently more than 300 patients in three divisions of the hospital.

"Mental illness and substance use disorders affect Pennsylvanians from all walks of life," said Miller. "Over the last century, Torrance State Hospital has provided high quality services to individuals living with serious mental illnesses. The department is committed to increasing awareness, decreasing stigma, and providing quality care to these individuals so that all Pennsylvanians who need assistance can get it."

Torrance State Hospital is committed to providing all persons who have serious mental illness, including those with a co-occurring disorder, the opportunity for growth, recovery, and inclusion in their community. Care is provided through evidence and promise-based psychiatric treatment and substance use disorder services and access to the supports and services that meet patients' unique needs. This allows individuals to enjoy a quality of life that facilitates personal growth and achievement.

The face of mental health treatment has changed significantly over the years to include a focus on recovery, community reintegration, and consumer driven services. Torrance State Hospital is part of a continuum of services offered to individuals transitioning through their recovery journey. The hospital is a temporary level of care to allow for stabilization with constant focus on community reintegration.

To begin the centennial celebration, the public is invited to a worship service and reception which will take place on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. in the McKinnis Auditorium on the Torrance State Hospital Campus. Former patients and staff are extended a special invitation. All who wish to attend are asked to RSVP by calling Mary Galinac at 724-459-4453.

Centennial planning also includes the opening of a historical museum on the grounds of the hospital, encasement of a time capsule, and more. A calendar of events during the centennial year will be shared with the public.
