11/20/16 - Foundation awards two oncology nursing awards

A foundation established by the surviving siblings of a Longview woman who wanted to do something for nurses who helped her through her final days has named its latest honorees.

Registered nurse Laura Brumett and licensed vocational nurse Staci Winters each were honored with the 2016 Laura Blanche Jackson Oncology Nursing Award.

Each was awarded a $1,500 scholarship Tuesday in ceremonies at the Longview Cancer Center.

Brumett is a Baylor University graduate who worked from 2010 to 2014 at Trinity Mother Frances Hospital, now Christus Trinity Mother Frances.

While at the Tyler hospital, she served as a bedside nurse in the medical oncology unit.

After a six-month stint as a clinic and proactive nurse at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Clinic, Brumett joined the Longview Regional Medical Center Oncology Unit where she has served the past year as clinical coordinator.

Winters is a graduate of the Kilgore College Licensed Vocational Nurse program.

She has worked at Heartsway Hospice since 1996 and is taking courses toward an associate degree of nursing at Excelsior College.

"My plan is to be a registered nurse by February 2017," she wrote in a Jackson Award recipients' profile. "I will continue serving hospice patients."

The annual award honors the wishes of Laura Jackson, a Longview High School graduate who was affected by the nurses who cared for her.

Jackson died of cancer in 1992.

Her father, Dr. Frank Jackson, said the award has grown from one recipient a year to two.

"(She said), 'Something needs to be done for all these oncology nurses,' " he said after this past year's awards were announced.

The award is just one way the foundation benefits nursing.

Jackson's alma mater, Baylor University, has a lectureship in her name, and the World Affairs Council where she worked has a scholarship in her name in San Antonio.
