8/19/17 - New wing of Ventura County Medical Center opens to patients Sunday [Ventura County Star, Calif.]

Aug. 19There will be more activity than usual Sunday morning at Ventura County Medical Center when a much anticipated new wing opens to patients.

The north tower wing, a $305 million project that first broke ground in 2013, will be open to new emergency room patients starting 6 a.m., and existing patients will be transferred to the new rooms.

"We've been anxiously anticipating the opening of the building," said Dr. Bryan Wong, VCMC medical director. "It's really a celebration for our patients, who will be able to be cared for and healed in the new building. Excited is probably an understatement."

The Ventura hospital's new wing which includes the emergency room, intensive care, outpatient laboratory, surgery, labor and delivery, pharmacy and other departments was first unveiled in June with a celebration ceremony. On Sunday, the new facilities will be up and running.

Moving patients to the new wing took months of planning, and that plan is incredibly detailed. About 80 patients will be moved to the new digs, and that trip, from room to corridor to elevator to hallway to new room, has been carefully timed.

"It is a very orchestrated plan, and the key is to make sure it's safe," Wong said.

From a patient's perspective, the most noteworthy features of the new wing are the spacious rooms.

All rooms of the 125-bed wing are single-occupancy and larger than even the double-occupancy rooms currently available. Delivery rooms also double as recovery rooms, so new moms can stay in one place.

The rooms also have couches that turn into beds for relatives to stay overnight. That feature, Wong said, has made the hospital change its visiting policy. With double-occupancy rooms, visiting families might impose on the other patient, Wong said.

From a surgeon's perspective, larger operating rooms are a key feature.

Current operating rooms, built in the 1950s or 1960s, are about 300 square feet. The new rooms are up to 1,000 square feet, allowing for much larger equipment, like the da Vinci robotic surgery system the medical center recently acquired.

"These new rooms allow for the equipment and technology that is really cutting-edge and allows the surgeons to do their best work," Wong said.

The new wing also includes outdoor features such as a healing garden, pediatric playground and cafe.
