3/3/18 - Thousands in Merseyside missing out on way to save 300 from prescription charges

"Hundreds of thousands" of people are missing out on a scheme which could save them up to 300 on prescription charges.

The Government announced this week that prescriptions would rise to 8.80 on April 1 - making it more important than ever to make savings.

But figures from MoneySavingExpert show that large numbers of people are missing out on savings from the prescription prepayment certificate (PPC) system.

The certificate allows for an unlimited number of prescriptions to be bought for a set charge in a three or 12 month period ? for either 29.10 or 104.

Pharmacist Shamir Patel, of online pharmacy, based in Skelmersdale , is urging people to make the most of the scheme.

He said: "At the moment, each prescription costs 8.60, so if you need four a month then you're instantly saving money by buying a three month PPC for 29.10.

"If you have regular, ongoing repeat prescriptions, then the savings can be anywhere above 285 a year.

"The Government don't tend to publicise PPCs very well but, if you're not entitled to a repeat prescription, then it's a no-brainer."

NHS figures show 825,677 people in England paid for 13 or more prescription items and, on average, bought 18 items in 2016-17.

People requiring two prescriptions a month would save just over 100 a year with a 12-month PPC, or 205 for those needing three items.

PPCs, sometimes referred to a health 'season ticket', cover all NHS prescriptions for people in England, including dental prescriptions, no matter how many items are needed.

There are number of payment options available, and the 12-month PPC can be purchased through 10 monthly direct debit instalments.

Prescriptions in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are free and some people in England are entitled to free prescriptions, including those under the age of 16, those aged 16 to 18 and in full time education, or those aged 60 or over.

Pregnant women and women who have had a baby in the last 12 months are also entitled to free prescriptions.

Shamir added: "Buying a PPC is quick and easy online using the NHS Business Services Authority website.

"You can then show the email receipt at the pharmacy if you're using a high street store, or input the details online if you're using an online chemist.

"If you use cashback sites, you can also claim a further 10 per cent back on your orders."

They can be bought online and start from the day the application is submitted, unless a different start date is requested.

However, the start date must be within one month before or after the date of the application.

NHS Business Services Authority which deals with PPCs, has said it widely promotes them.

It said more than two million were issued during 2016 and 2017.
